Early Saturday, a Durham police officer was killed in a car wreck after he lost control of his patrol car and slammed into an overpass support.

The officer, 33, was traveling west on Holloway Street at 3am, to help a fellow officer with a traffic stop. He swerved out of control and crashed into a concrete column that supports the U.S 70 overpass, said police.

This is the second serious accident that involved a Triangle police officer on his way to respond to a call, in two days. A Raleigh Police Officer remains in the hospital after he lost control of his car and hit a stand of trees on Thursday.

Durham police did not provide accident details. They did not say how fast he was going or describe the traffic stop he was on his way too, saying only that the accident is under investigation.
