Diabetes is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. This horrible disease is a leading cause of heart disease, blindness, and nerve damage and kidney failure.

Many United Stated citizens are disabled as a result of complications from diabetes.

These disabled Americans are entitled to full Social Security disability insurance benefits.

If you are unable to earn a substantial income from a diabetes related condition and if that condition has lasted or is expected to last for at least a year, you may collect full social security disability insurance benefits.

If you are disabled, contact you nearest Social Security office and apply for disability benefits. If you are turned down for these benefits, it is important to contact an experienced Social Security disability lawyer immediately.

Social Security disability lawyers win most of their cases on appeal after the claimant has repeatedly been turned down.

Two forms of diabetes exist: Type 1 and Type 2.

In Type 1, the pancreas basically quits and the person no longer produces the insulin required for them to process sugar and carbohydrates. Type 1 basically means your pancreas has called it quits and you aren't producing the insulin you need to process sugar and carbohydrates. The person then has to administer insulin for the remainder of their life.

The most common form of diabetes is Type 2, in which either the body does not produce enough insulin, or the cells ignore the insulin that is being released. Injections of insulin may not be required for some time, though.

Potential complications that relate to Type 1 and 2 diabetes are heart disease, blindness, nerve damage, and kidney damage.

Ann Albright, president of healthcare and education for the American Diabetes Association, worries that at the rate diabetes is growing in the country, the needs of the people who suffer from it may no longer be able to be provided.

For those 47 million U.S. citizens who lack health insurance, the situation is even worse. Paul Ginsburg, the president of the Center for Studying Health System Change, says that those with insurance have a lot of resources at their disposal, but those that are without insurance are basically on their own.

Experts have noted that all would benefit from a more balanced diet and more exercise. They also recommend that if one notices any of the warning signs, such as rapid weight loss, an increase in thirst, or frequent urination, then they should quickly have themselves checked.
