On Tuesday night, a severe personal injury accident on Old U.S. 421 in Harnett County sent five people to area hospitals. There were three vehicles involved in the collision, which occurred just before 7 p.m.
Highway Patrol reports reveal that Donald Turlington, 23, was traveling on Old U.S.421 when his vehicle crossed the center line, striking a vehicle driven by Vernon Arnold, 47. A third vehicle, driven by Chance Campbell, 36, swerved in an effort to avoid the accident and ran off the road.
The scene was grim with vehicle parts scattered around the accident site. Road blocks were placed on Old U.S. 421 to redirect traffic while the North Carolina Highway Patrol and Harnett County EMS tended to the victims and removed the wreckage.
The wreck occurred during extremely heavy thunderstorms in the area.
Although Mr. Turlington was reportedly driving at the posted speed limit of 55mph, he was charged with driving left of center, exceeding a safe speed for conditions, and not wearing his seatbelt. The passenger in his vehicle was also charged with not wearing a seatbelt.
The drivers, as well as their passengers, were taken to Betsy Johnson Regional Hospital in Dunn. A spokesperson for BJRH reported that one of the victims was later airlifted to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. The status of the victims has yet to be released.
