Medical Malpractice Insurer Rates to be Investigated

The North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers has filed a complaint with the North Carolina Department of Insurance, requesting that the Insurance Commissioner investigate rates being charged by Medical Mutual Insurance of North Carolina. It is a violation of state law to charge "excessive rates" for insurance.

Insurance companies like Medical Mutual have, for years, been claiming that expensive lawsuits and judgments against doctors have caused dramatic increases in medical malpractice insurance rates. However, advocates for the thousands of people who are injured, disabled or even killed as a result of medical mistakes assert that the real reason for the huge rate increases is insurance companies' desire for larger profits and the lagging economy.
